La purezza, la giustizia e la santità non sono elementi esteriori e formali, ma dipendono dal cuore e dalla mente di ciascuna persona, dai valori che sceglie come riferimento e dalle scelte concrete e vissute per seguire quei valori. Perciò il Signore vuole insegnare a noi, suoi discepoli, che dinanzi a Dio, una persona non è pura, giusta e santa perchè “appare” così esteriormente, ma solo se ciò che appare all’esterno corrisponde al suo atteggiamento interiore, al suo modo di pensare e di vivere concreto e quotidiano. Inoltre Gesù ci ha fatto comprendere che, con le sole nostre forze, noi possiamo sì conoscere e comprendere i comandamenti di Dio, ma non riusciamo metterli in pratica senza il suo aiuto. Per questo il Signore con il battesimo ha posto il suo Spirito dentro di noi perchè ci dia la forza, il coraggio e l’amore necessari per scegliere e progredire ogni giorno nel bene. I farisei confidavano sulla loro giustizia, mentre noi confidiamo sull’opera di salvezza di Dio che ci trasforma progressivamente da peccatori a giusti. È questo il senso delle parole di S. Giacomo:
Fratelli miei carissimi, ogni buon regalo e ogni dono perfetto vengono dall’alto e discendono dal Padre, creatore della luce.
