“Nel segreto”
Lettera per la Quaresima ai fratelli della Madonna della Pace
Carissimi fratelli, la Quaresima, “segno sacramentale della nostra conversione”, come ci ricorda la Liturgia, è il momento favorevole per affrontare la lotta contro il Maligno con le armi della penitenza: l’elemosina, la preghiera e il digiuno. Gesù ci esorta a impugnare queste armi non davanti agli uomini, ma di fronte a Dio Padre, “che vede nel segreto, che è nel segreto” (cf. Mt 6,1-18). Il termine “segreto”, in greco kryptòs, che significa nascosto, richiama alla mente lo spazio sacro della cripta di una chiesa o di una basilica; si tratta di un’immagine particolarmente adatta a lasciarci intuire qualcosa della realtà della nostra coscienza, “forza motrice della conversione”. Come la cripta di un edificio sacro sostiene l’intera struttura e riceve luce dall’alto, così la coscienza, se è illuminata da Dio e dalla sua Parola, rende capace l’uomo di incamminarsi verso la verità, di cercarla e di sottomettersi ad essa. Quella della cripta è un’immagine che si avvicina a quanto si legge al n. 16 della Gaudium et spes, che descrive la coscienza come “il nucleo più segreto e sacrario dell’uomo, dove egli è solo con Dio, la cui voce risuona nell’intimità”. Ecco allora schiudersi di fronte a noi i giorni della quaresima come un’altra opportunità che il Signore ci offre per stare con noi stessi, per scendere nella cripta del nostro animo e avventurarci in quella lotta interiore, in quella fatica del descensus ad cor (discesa al cuore) di cui parlano i padri, che anche Gesù ha intrapreso e ha vinto nel deserto. Ecco davanti a noi i giorni del pellegrinaggio in direzione del nostro essere più profondo che chiamiamo coscienza perché è solo lì che può cominciare la nostra conversione! Che potremmo chiamare “l’uomo nascosto del cuore” (ho kriptòs tês kardìas ánthropos) come lo definisce la Prima lettera di Pietro (1Pt 3,4). In ciascun essere umano si cela, infatti, un uomo interiore: suo compito è quello di esserne consapevole e di predisporre tutto affinché questa identità profonda cresca e si rinnovi di giorno in giorno (cf. 2Cor 4,16). “La coscienza – scrive Romano Guardini – è per l’uomo come una finestra aperta sull’eternità: una finestra però che allo stesso tempo dà anche sul corso degli avvenimenti quotidiani”. “È la nostra suprema bussola; – aggiunge il grande teologo italo-tedesco – ma, se è lecito esprimersi così, questa bussola può a sua volta perdere la bussola (…), può diventare superficiale, sconsiderata, ottusa”. Oggi, si sa, viviamo in un momento storico in cui sembra si sia smarrita ogni parvenza di coscienza personale e collettiva. Ogni persona presume di essere il baluardo della libertà o l’ultima istanza della ricerca della verità. Si tratta in questo tempo di passare dall’esteriorità delle maschere di carnevale (e non solo…) al segreto del cuore; dagli oppiacei e barbiturici offerti dalla cultura odierna all’autentica vigilanza evangelica; dalle letture degli oroscopi e dei gossip all’ascolto autentico della Parola di Dio che, come scriveva Origene, è “la tromba che tiene sveglio il cuore per il combattimento, affinché tu non dorma mentre il tuo avversario veglia”; dal torpore dello spirito provocato dalle nostre tante ingordigie alla sobrietà di una vita povera come quella del Vangelo; dal chiasso assordante di quello che ci porta fuori di noi (diciamo sempre più spesso: “è fuori di sé!”) al silenzio che possiamo trovare soltanto ritornando dentro di noi. Preghiamo il Signore che in questa Quaresima ci prenda per mano e, Lui “che è più grande del nostro cuore e conosce bene ogni cosa” (1Gv 3,20), scenda insieme con noi nella cripta del nostro “io”. Combatta con noi contro il maligno. Ci faccia morire al peccato e, afferrandoci come ha fatto con Adamo, ci faccia risalire alla luce. E, tra quaranta giorni, per noi sia Pasqua davvero!
